The iconic Wembley Stadium London is set to host the 137th match featuring two of the biggest rivals in English football in the final of the biggest domestic cup competition, the Emirates FA Cup.
If the weather holds, it is going to be a warm sunny afternoon as both Chelsea and Manchester United try to salvage something from the 2017/2019 season. For both clubs, the FA clubs would represent a fitting consolation after disappointing Premier League and Champions League campaign.
Chelsea would be more motivated to win the tie. They would be hurting from their failure to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
An extra motivation would come from Coach Antonio Conte’s determination to win one last trophy in what is likely his last match in charge of the Chelsea. He would love to add the FA Cup medal to the Premier League medal he won last season.
An extra incentive for Chelsea is that losing this final would give them the unenviable record of being losing finalists in two consecutive FA Cup finals. They lost the final to Arsenal FC last year after coming into the tie as favorites and league champions.
Jose Mourinho would use victory in the final to cement Manchester United’s position as the second best team in England after coming second in the league. Having to settle for second best is a huge humble pie to swallow for a man of Mourinho’s stature.
He had a proud record of always winning the league in his second season at a new club. But Manchester City’s unstoppable gallop to the league title made sure that record is now consigned to the trashcan.
A Manchester United victory should at least be used as a springboard for bigger things next season.
Mourinho is a very defensive coach; Conte also favors a cautious approach to a game against top sides. In effect, both coaches would try to nullify each other’s strengths.
This is a match-up for football purists. Neutral fans expecting to see fireworks might be a tad disappointed unless one or both coaches decide to surprise the world with different tactics on the day.
Previous FA Cup Final encounters
Surprisingly for two clubs with a long tradition of being two of the best clubs in England, they have only met twice in the final of the FA Cup.
At the present, the head to head score is a tie with each winning one of their previous two meetings in the final.
The first time they met was in 1994. United won comfortably by 4-0. The second time was in 2007. Chelsea narrowly edged past Manchester United by a lone goal scored in extra time.
Interestingly, that Chelsea victory was masterminded by Jose Mourinho who is the current Manchester United coach.
Previous FA cup winner’s medal
Chelsea have won the FA Cup on 7 previous occasions; the first was in 1970 and the last one was in 2012.
Manchester United on the other have won the FA Cup on 12 previous occasions. The first was in 1908 while the last one was two years ago.
A victory for United would see them equal Arsenal’s record 13 FA cup trophies.
Likely lineups and team news
Antonio Conte should have his strongest first eleven available to him for this encounter.
The only absentees through injury are David Luiz and Ethan Ampadu who weren’t even likely to feature if they had been fit. Rose Barkley started his second league match of the season last week against Newcastle United.
However, he is not expected to start the match.
Their form coming into this match is patchy. After a late rally that looked like they would be able to overhaul either of Liverpool or Hotspurs to clinch one of the Champions League spots, their challenge petered out with a draw and loss in the final two games of the season.
On their way to the final, they scored 12 goals and conceded just 2 goals
League form from last 5 matches: WWWDL
Possible starting lineup: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Fabregas, Kante, Moses, Alonso, Hazard, Willian, Morata
Manchester United: 4-2-3-1
Jose Mourinho would hope the arrowhead of his team’s attack Romelu Lukaku is fit to play the match. He has been out injured and missed the last two weeks of the league season.
In the last two matches, Mourinho had rotated the team heavily to motivate some players to fight for a place in the Wembley final team. Whether his motivational tactics worked would be tested today.
However, he should have all his main guns ready for what is likely to be a bruising battle.
United go into this having done enough to secure second place behind neighbors Manchester City. Despite the second place finish, it would grate on Mourinho’s ego that he finished 19 points behind City.
Manchester United scored 12 goals on their way to the final conceding just the solitary goal.

Players to watch
Alexis Sanchez (United)
When Alexis Sanchez joined Manchester United in January, many felt he was the final missing puzzle of the team Mourinho was building.
His first few displays were bright, bringing his characteristic high-energy, relentless chasing football to the team.
But a few weeks later, it seemed something wasn’t just working. Or perhaps, the expectations on him were too unrealistic. Basically, fans felt he wasn’t in sync with his teammates on the field of play.
But that is misunderstanding the way Sanchez plays. He never goes for the simple pass. He tends to favor the high stakes risky moves which when they come off, the rewards are plentiful.
That is why he has a high turnover in all the games he played for the team.
However, Wembley is a stage where he flourishes. The last couple of occasions he featured here, he played a blinder scoring a goal each against Aston Villa and Chelsea in 2015 and 2017 respectively to help Arsenal to the winner’s medal.
With Sanchez on fire, the Chelsea defense would have their hands really full. There is no guessing what the mercurial Chilean would do at any time. Though United fans would hope he simply pulverizes the Chelsea defense to submission.
Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Eden Hazard is by quite some distance Chelsea’s best player this season. On several occasions, the team had to depend on the Belgian to pull some off his magic to help them win matches.
His movement, pace, and dribbles have a way of pulling defenses apart and unsettling even the most tightly knit defensive formation. Expect Mourinho to detail a man to follow Hazard like a shadow throughout the match.
The duty of man-marking Hazard would likely fall on Herrera. That is one duel to look forward to as Herrera is no slouch when it comes to playing dirty.
No matter who plays up front for Chelsea, Hazard is the go-to player when the rails have fallen off the Chelsea attack.
The question surrounding Hazard at the moment is whether he would still be a Chelsea player next season. He has cut a very frustrated figure this season with rumors that he wants to try his luck in a different club, preferably Real Madrid of Spain.
N’Golo Kante (Chelsea)
Kante’s game is based on simplicity. His execution is always timed to perfection making it look rather easy. But what makes his spatial awareness the best is his intelligence and the ability to anticipate opponents’ move by two steps.
Last season’s Premier League player of the year is, along with Hazard, one of the first names at the top of Chelsea’s team list. He is the sort of player you struggle to remember when he had a bad game even when his team is losing.
On the field of play, Kante uses his boundless energy to full effects. When he is not breaking up the opposing team’s attack; you would find him at the other end of the pitch pulling the opposing defenders out of shape with his runs.
He is also a valuable asset in initiating and taking part in counter-attacks.
Kante would not get you many goals. As a matter of fact, he hardly scores. But what he brings to the team is much more than his weight in gold.
Paul Pogba (United)
All eyes would be on Pogba for several reasons. Jose Mourinho has spent almost all season berating his record signing for indiscipline on the field of play.
Questions have been raised over his ability to deliver since his coach called him out for lackluster performances.
Here is the thing though, United are always stronger with him playing. The stats bear that out.
His display in the 3-2 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium was simply a reminder to the whole world that he is the best midfielder of his generation.
Mourinho can complain as much as he wants, but Pogba is a typical Mourinho player. He is strong, tall, athletic and never gets intimidated by the opposition. For these reasons, Pogba always features in the big matches.
Cesc Fabregas in the Chelsea midfield would have to be at his elusive best. If not Pogba would simply steamroll over that midfield to set up his teammates with defense-splitting passes that would hopefully lead to goals.
Like Chelsea’s star player Hazard, nobody knows for sure if Pogba would still be a United player come next season. It had emerged that his agent had tried to pass him on to teams like PSG of France and Manchester City in the January transfer window.
It wasn’t clear if the player himself had sanctioned the move because of his testy relationship with his manager, Jose Mourinho.
No matter what, expect to see Pogba prancing imperiously around the pitch like an expensive racehorse that knows it is the best beast in the neighborhood.
Due to the similar styles of both coaches, this match is going to be a cagey affair with both coaches content to sit back hoping someone makes a fatal mistake.
It won’t be a surprise if Antonio Conte ditches his desired formation so that Bakayoko can come in to provide steel to the midfield partnership between Kante and Cesc Fabregas. In which case, he would sacrifice one of his forward players.
Mourinho though would always stick to his script of ‘defense first’ and doesn’t expect his team to make any costly mistake.
Predicted score line: 2-1 in favor of Chelsea.
