The city of Lyon would host the highly anticipated Europa League final between Atlético Madrid of Spain and Marseille of France.

Marseille go into the tie as the unfavored underdogs. If they pull off an unlikely victory, they would become the first team from France to win the Europa League.

The bookmakers and everybody’s favorite, Athletico Madrid, would go onto the tie attempting to make sure Marseille don’t become the first French team to win the cup at their expense.

For Atlético, winning the 2019 Europa League cup would be the third time. This would make them the most successful side in the Europa League along with Seville also of Spain who have 3 Europa cups already.

The match pits two teams with constructing styles.

Atlético coach, Diego Simeone, has drilled his team to become one of the meanest defensive units in Europe.

No matter the personnel at his disposable, Simeone ensures the whole team defends as a unit. They are experts at grinding out results without flourish if that is what is required to win a match.

There cannot be a bigger contrast between Coach Rudi Garcia of Marseille and his rival from Madrid.

Garcia has built a team that plays to the strength of influential playmaker Dimitri Payet. Marseille favor the intricate passing game with intermittent short bursts of speed to take advantage of available spaces when possible.

Because everything good about Marseille is linked to Payet, the midfielder is likely to have the most touches of any player on both sides.

So it is going to be a fascinating match between an ultra-defensive team and an expansive team.

Previous Encounters

In spite of their well-known pedigree in Europe, both clubs had only ever crossed each other’s path on two previous occasions.

It all happened in the group stages of the 2008/2009 Champions League group stage. Atlético defeated Marseille by 2-1 at their former ground, the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

In the reverse fixture in Marseille, the match ended in a goalless draw. Atlético qualified for the round of 16 as runner-ups to Liverpool FC in the group.

Marseille, on the other hand, came third in the group and had to move down to the Europa League as the third-placed team.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid, also known as Los Colchonneros, qualified for the Europa League having placed third in their Champions League group.

This was hugely disappointing for a team that had hoped to go one better this season having qualified for the Champions League finals twice in the last four finals. They lost on both occasions to Real Madrid.

In the Europa League, they have played 8 games up to this point. They have a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and a loss to reach this last stage of the competition.

On the way, they have scored 17 goals and conceded 4 goals.

League Form last five matches: WLWWDD

Possible starting line-up: Oblak, Juanfran, Godin, Savic, Saul Niguez, Lucas, Correa, Gabi, Koke, Griezmann, Diego Costa

Doubtful: Atlético Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko is available for selection having served a one-match suspension for the red card he received against Arsenal in the semi-final.

Doubts still persist on the availability of center back Jose Gimenez and midfielder Vitolo over injury concerns. They could still feature from the bench is they pass a late fitness test.

Coach Diego Costa would also be thrilled experienced full-back Filipe Luis is back from injury.

Marseille

Marseille booked their place in the Europa League Final final by defeating Austrian champions Salzburg 3-2 on aggregate.

For a while in the second leg of the semi-final, it looked like Marseille would be eliminated by the Austrians.

It took an extra time goal from Rolando before Marseille snatched the all-important third goal that propelled them to the final.

To reach this stage, Marseille won seven, drew two and lost five of their 14 matches in the Europa League. On the way, they scored 20 goals and conceded 11 goals.

League form from last 5 matches: DWLDWW

Possible starting line-up: Pele, Luis Gustavo, Amavi, Rami, Sakai, Zambo Anguissa, Sanson, Payet, Thauvin, Sarr, Mitrogolou

Doubtful: The hero of the extra time winner against Salzburg, the central defender Rolando is a doubt for this match due to a slight injury. Also a doubt is the influential forward Greek forward Kostas Mitrogolou.

Though midfielder Bouna Sarr dislocated his shoulder in that exciting Semi-final, he is expected to be fit. The same applies to the most important player of the team, Dmitri Payet.

He missed the last league game against Guingamp on Friday. His recovery in time would be a welcome boost for Coach Rudi Garcia.

Road to the finals from knock out stage (aggregate scores)

Marseille: vs Braga, 3-1; vs Bilbao, 5-2; vs. Leipzig, 5-3; vs Salzburg, 3-2

Atlético Madrid: vs Copenhagen, 5-1; vs Locomotiv, 2-1; Sporting Lisbon, 2-1; vs Arsenal 2-1.

Players to watch

Dimitri Payet (Marseille)

Dimitri Payet

Dimitri Payet

Most fans of the Premier League remember Payet as a mercurial attacking midfielder who had more tricks than a magician. Unfortunately, he was too unsettled at West Ham and had to leave to his home club Marseille.

Marseille fans would pray Payet is at his absolute best. On his day, the player is simply untouchable. In the Europa League, he leads the pack with the highest number of assists, 7.

The 31-year-old has also scored 3 goals in the Europa League to add to his 6 league goals.

He can also score the odd spectacular goals. Fans would also be watching out for his free kick specials. He scores some belters too from set pieces. So he is not just an assist king.

Coach Rudi Garcia would hope that his form, which has spectacularly improved in the last few weeks, would not desert him suddenly.

It has happened before as the player can sometimes spend a whole match sulking and generally stinking the air for his teammates.

Diego Costa (Atlético Madrid)

Diego Costa

Diego Costa

Diego Costa didn’t start the season with Atlético Madrid. He had to wait until January to make a return to Madrid after an acrimonious parting of ways with Chelsea.

But all talk of rustiness when he started playing in January was laid to rest as he hit the ground running. It is notable that the fortunes of Atlético saw an upturned after the arrival of Costa.

Naturally, the conclusion is the team would have qualified from the group stage of the Champions League of Costa had featured for them.

Since his arrival in January, he has scored 14 league goals in 14 matches. And in the Europa League he added another 4 goals to his season tally.

He is the razor-sharp point of the Atlético attack. There is no disputing that. It was his fine strike that settled the second leg of the semi-final clash against Arsenal in Madrid.

The good thing about Diego Costa is his consistency. So expect him to be at his battling best harrying the Marseille defenders.

Florian Thauvin (Marseille)

Florian Thauvin

Florian Thauvin

When Florian Thauvin left Newcastle United after 6 months to move to Marseille in January 2016, many Newcastle fans were glad to see the back of him.

He was seen as an expensive waste (£12 million) that couldn’t make the grade in the premier league because he was too soft. At least that was the thought in England as he made just 10 appearances without scoring a goal.

Today, back in his beloved Marseille, he has become a key player of Rudi Garcia’s team. He has become a versatile player that can play anywhere in the forward position especially on the wings.

The numbers speak eloquently for him. He has scored 22 times in the league to add to his 3 goals in the Europa League.

Fans of Marseille would be looking forward to the battle between him and Atlético Madrid’s fullback, Lucas Hernandez.

Hernandez is known to be a bit clumsy at times, so this could be area Marseille might try to exploit to pries open the Athletico defense.

This match could offer an opportunity for Thauvin to prove once and for all, that his misadventure three years ago in Newcastle was just a blip, an unfortunate glitch.

A fine performance could see him force his way into the French squad for the 2019 World Cup in Russia along with Dimitri Payet.

Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid)

Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann

This Europa League final could well be Antoine Griezmann’s final match for Atlético Madrid.

Since he joined them four years ago, he has justified everybody penny invested in him. He is now seen as favorite son of the club.

His impressive 79 league goals in 141 league matches are not the only thing that makes him special.

The 27-year-old is an all-round nice guy loved by all. When he had the opportunity to leave for greener pastures last year, he eschewed the move as he figured it would be unfair to Atlético who were serving a 1-year suspension from player recruitment.

His consistency in front of goal is remarkable for a wide forward. He is able to appear in the right place at the right time to put the finishing touch on a move.

There is more to his game though. His holdup play is superb making it easy for him to bring teammates into play.

He is the perfect foil for the combative Diego Costa; appearing at the right moment to put a gloss to the battering work of Diego Costa. Most often, that gloss is a goal.

For a slight player, he packs thunderbolts as shots in both legs. He has scored 4 goals in the Europa League to add to his 19 league goals this season.

Atlético Madrid would surely miss him next season. But no single fan would begrudge him his move to a new club.

Europa League Final Prediction

Atlético are heavy favorites to win the 2019 Europa League Cup. It is easy to understand why.

Diego Simeone has created one of the most adaptable squads in world football. No matter the opposition his team are able to display the same efficiency in defense and attack.

Against teams like Marseille who love hugging possession, Atlético tend to restrict the playing field by cutting off the most important passing lanes or channels

Every inch of grass would be contested by Atlético Madrid as they pressure Marseille into making mistakes. And with their fearsome striking duo of Costa and Griezmann, it is unlikely the mistakes would go unpunished.

Marseille would rely heavily on the unpredictability of cup finals to pull a surprise win. The Europa League would be just like any cup final – anything can happen.

But Marseille’s progress to this final was heavily reliant on home form.

Out of the nine games they played in the Europa League, they managed to win just once away from their home ground, the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

The venue of the final match in Lyon could work in their favor though as the city, which is in France, could be considered home.

But it is still hard to look beyond Atlético Madrid as the winners. Madrid love winning games by the odd goal. However, a 2-0 in favor of Madrid is more likely.

All EPL New Rules For The 2019/2020 Season

The International Football Association Board, IFAB, has affirmed English Premier League, EPL new rules and changes for the 2019/2020 season. The new principles would influence the Freekicks, Handball, Substitution, Drop ball and cards for coaches, NIGERIA NEWS reports.

The Video Aide Ref popularly known as VAR would so be implemented by next season in the English Premier League, EPL. The aforementioned areas where there would be new implementation would surely have a great effect in the league.

EPL New Rules Ahead 2019/2020 Season…

SUBSTITUTION

searchform

The rule that would be implemented under this is that there would be no chance given to any players to waste time on the pitch anymore, as substituted players would have to leave the pitch at the closest side of the pitch and card may probably be awarded for wasting time.

PENALTY KICKS

The Goalkeepers would, therefore, have to have a foot put on the line and would not be allowed to touch the goal posts before the shoot out of the penalty kicks. In this manner, no Goalkeeper would be able to exploit any chance to avert an opportunity to lead.

COACHES CARDS

The coach would also have to be carded by the Referee in a similar as players were being carded during a match. Both yellow and red cards would also be applicable to coaches as well as starting from next season.

HANDBALLS

  • The goal would be denied if the ball actually strikes any player’s hand during the development to have a goal.
  • If any player should make any favourable moves in handling the ball outside the penalty kickbox, even if it regarded unintentional, freekicks would be awarded.
  • The IFAB dispose of ‘manufactured’ restarts if there be any drop balls.

The IFAB make it clear that:

“The current dropped ball procedure often leads to a ‘manufactured’ restart which is ‘exploited’ unfairly or an aggressive confrontation.

“Returning the ball to the team that last played it restores what was ‘lost’ when play was stopped, except in the penalty area where it is simpler to return the ball to the goalkeeper.

“To prevent that team gaining an unfair advantage, all players of both teams, except the player receiving the ball, must be at least 4m (4.5 yds) away.”
