Economic Downturn: State Governors To Raise Bonds From NSE

Published

Governors Seek bonds for state project
Due to the increase in projects from different states in the country and the matching low revenue, State Governors plan to seek bonds from the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE.
Governors Seek bonds for state project

Governors In A Meeting

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF Chairman, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari disclosed this at the just concluded Governors’ Forum meeting held at the state House.
Yari added that plans are underway to set up a committee consisting of members of the NSE and the NGF to ensure that the bonds get to the states.

He said that the decision is a necessity as the country is experiencing an economic downturn.
He said, “We received briefing from the Nigerian Stock Exchange on how to address the issue of cash crunch in the nation.”
“They spoke to us on the need to raise bond. Globally, you use external loans and not internal loans to finance infrastructure.”
“ So the stock exchange has given the opportunity to some states that are ready to go into the stock exchange to raise bond to finance some projects because what is tied to the bonds is our income and our income is shrinking.”

“Through the bonds, we can finance projects that will impact on water supply and sanitation among others.”
“We are putting a committee in place made up of members of the stock exchange as well as from the NGF secretariat to work together on that,” he concluded.
