Russian President, Vladimir Putin, during a surprise visit at a festival, asked a Nigerian student that was present at the event to pinch him after the young man expressed his delirium in the presence of the president.
The encounter occurred during an informal meeting at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi, where Putin’s arrival at the Olympic Park in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, late on Thursday came as a surprise for the guests present at the festival.
“I’m so overwhelmed. I can’t believe I’m standing in front of the Russian president,” the awestruck Nigerian student, Edostrey, said.
In response to the young man’s excitement, Putin jovially suggested a friendly solution: “Go ahead and pinch me”, he said.
The student, reluctant to actually go ahead and pinch the Russian President, resolved instead to have Putin pinch him, greatly amusing the assembled crowd.
Apart from Putin’s gestures with the young student, the guests at the festival had plenty of questions for the Russian President, including asking him to recount the most remarkable event of his youth.
“My youth passed a long time ago, I forgot everything,” Putin joked, adding that “of course, there are – it’s mostly sporting events. They are my most vivid memories”, the president said.
Also in the moment, another student wanted to know if the Russian President was eager to take a break from his busy schedule and join “the youth hangout” at the festival.
“Of course, I’d love to,” Putin laughed, making it clear that it would not be possible.
During the speech that was made by the President at the opening ceremony on Sunday, President Putin said that the 2017 event would gather 30, 000 people, making it the most representative edition in history.
The festival, organised by the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), along with the International Union of Students since 1947, is being held in Russia for the third time since it was staged in Moscow in 1957 and in 1985.
