Looking ahead to the 2019 Presidential elections, we started a series of top APC politicians who could rival Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari for the Presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
You can click here to read the first instalment of the series. We profiled the current Vice-President Prof Yemi Osinbajo and current Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki as the first two APC politicians who could step into the race.
Now, we look at the 3rd, 4th and 5th Top APC Politicians who can rival ‘Sai Baba’ for the APC Presidential ticket if he elects to seek a second term in office.
Orji Uzor Kalu
Orji Uzor Kalu is a consummate businessman and an astute politician. The South-East politician has years of experience in the political scene, having been in 3 political parties till date.
Kalu was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 1st and 2nd term he served as the Governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2007. Approaching the end of his second term, he founded the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), on whose platform he contested for the Presidency in the 2007 Elections. In November 2016, he joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after resigning his Board of Trustees position with PPA. He is indeed a man well skilled in the art of politics.
The Chairman of the international business conglomerate, SLOK Holding (parent company of Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers) is rumoured to have switched to the APC to improve his chances of getting into the Aso Rock Villa.
Though the ruling APC has unequivocally stated that it has zoned the Presidency to the Northern Region, now is a very good time for Orji Uzor Kalu to test the waters by picking up the form for the APC Ticket. Having in mind that if he doesn’t win the ticket, it is most likely that the Presidency will be zoned to the South-East come 2023, then contesting now would be an investment for the future.
This will stand him in good stead, provide him with the experience of contesting in real political primaries and also put him on top of the ladder when the 2023 Presidential Elections comes around.
By our ratings, Orji Uzor Kalu stands a 4/10 chance of edging President Muhammadu Buhari to the APC Presidential ticket if they both stand at the Party Primaries.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a politician whose reputation precedes him. Two-time Governor of Lagos State, unarguably the man who led Lagos into the new generation, handpicked Governors to continue his legacy, the de-facto head of Nigeria’s economic verve, Lagos and arguably the political leader of South-western Nigeria, he is indeed a threat to President Buhari.
Tinubu is a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of the few pillars of the party having been the one who led the now-defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) into the APC merger leading to the 2015 Elections.
A political God-father to many still in the political scene (his wife, a serving senator, being one of them), he is one of the very few Nigerians that can singlehandedly crumble the polity of the nation.
He is known to have Presidential ambitions and only gave up his Vice-Presidential slot to Yemi Osinbajo in the 2015 Elections, it is expected that the Jagaban Borgu of Lagos will take one more crack at the presidency.
In 2019, he will be 67, in 2023, 71, so this might represent his only realistic shot at the Presidency. All he needs to do is consolidate his political network, he is also known to be well liked by the Northerners, thereby taking the fight to Buhari in his home region.
If Bola Ahmed Tinubu decides to pick the APC Presidential nomination form, you feel that almost no one in the APC can stop him. Thus, we rate his chances of defeating President Buhari at 8.5/10.
Mohammed Rabiu Musa, popularly called Rabiu Kwankwaso is a two-time Governor of Kano State and one of the likely contenders for the APC Presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso is a former member of House of Representatives representing Madobi Federal Constituency and was a Deputy Speaker of the House as at then. He became Governor of Kano State in 1999, ruled till 2003 after which he was appointed as the Defense Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 before leading Kano state again in 2011.
The current Senator representing Kano Central, he is one of the few Northern politicians seen as an option to either contest against or replace President Muhammadu Buhari for the APC Presidential ticket.
A huge followership in his state and the North coupled with his longevity in the Nigerian Political system, there are few who can match his years of experience and achievement.
His chances of getting the endorsement of the APC are low, so we’ve rated him a 4/10.
