7 Possible Atiku Running Mate 2019

Published

on

Former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, who won the PDP Presidential ticket yesterday in a keenly contested affair which saw Aminu Tambuwal and Bukola Saraki emerge as 2nd and 3rd respectively in the polls.

However, with Atiku Abubakar emerging as PDP Presidential candidate, he is then set to pick a running mate ahead of next year general election. Reports in the past few hours strongly believes that the former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, would pick a candidate from the Southern Eastern region of Nigeria.

There are strong claims that former Anambra state governor, Peter Obi, is in line to be picked by the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar. It remains to be seen if Peter Obi would eventually be picked as Atiku Abubakar running mate ahead of next year general election. It was sources close to the Turaki of Adamawa that made the claim because he was accustomed to pick a candidate from the South East and that is why Peter Obi emerged as the preferred candidate.

After leaving APC to join PDP, his running mate is not likely to come from the All Progressive Congress (APC) but from other political parties especially from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The other reasons why it looks likely that Peter Obi would emerge as his running mate is that Peter Obi ruled Anambra state very well while being the governor of the state. And since Atiku Abubakar has made the decision to select his Chief of Staff from the Northern part of the country and also he selected his Presidential Campaign Director General from the South west region of Nigeria in the person of Gbenga Daniels, it would be logical and constitutional that he would select his running mate from the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

However, not only Peter Obi has emerged as the potential running mate from the south east. The other names which has emerged to be the potential running mate to Atiku Abubakar are the former finance minister in the person of Okonjo Iweala, and the current Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. After speaking extensively about Peter Obi being the potential running mate to Atiku Abubakar, we take a look at other possible running mate to Atiku Abubakar for next year presidential election. They include:

  • Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

He was the former Governor of Kano state and a current senator. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso might be feeling the weight of political battle with Umar Ganduje, but he will fancy being the running mate to Atiku Abubakar next year. Rabiu Kwankwaso who contested for APC Presidential ticket in the year 2014 alongside Atiku Abubakar in the primaries held in Lagos, was leading in the total votes against Atiku Abubakar. However, it looks unlikely by the day that Rabiu Kwankwaso would be the running mate to Atiku Abubakar because he hails from the north and like I said earlier, it is then logical he picks someone from other tribe. Nonetheless, Rabiu Kwankwaso will be on the shortlist of the former vice president as we await who he would pick to be his running mate.

  • Ayo Fayose

The fact that Atiku Abubakar defected to PDP from APC, has given the chance for Ayo Fayose who hails from Ekiti state to ever come closer to becoming the running mate to Atiku Abubakar. Ayo Fayose who has been eyeing the presidential seat having been the governor of Ekiti state, would not mind becoming second in command to Atiku Abubakar when finally he makes his decision on who would be his running mate. The positives which arises from the fact that Ayo Fayose might be Atiku’s running mate is because the former hails from South west and he has a knowledge of the government very well. However, it remains to be seen if Nigeria will be willing to have another vice president who hails from the South West having seen Yemi Osinbajo take office alongside President Muhammadu Buhari.

  • Ike Ekweremadu

Ike Ekweremadu, though still the current Deputy Senate President, would be ever willing to put down a resignation letter if he is selected to be the running mate to Atiku Abubakar ahead of next year general election. The current Deputy Senate President certainly loves a challenge and he would be licking his lips ahead of the decision to pick a running mate. Being from the South East gives him a upper hand to the likes of Rabiu Kwankwaso because Nigerians would love to see a change in the tribe of the Vice presidency.

  • Godswill Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio represents both the south-south and the south east region and he looks like a man who is ever ready to take the place of vice president if called upon by Atiku Abubakar. He is very outspoken which is what Atiku might like. In addtiton to that, he is ever willing to spend money campaigning in order to get what he wants.

  • Jimi Agbaje

Jimi Agbaje has been tagged the Good Man by various people especially from Lagos. Jimi Agbaje, having lost the governorship election to the present Governor of Lagos state Akinwimni Ambode, would be hoping he can grab a much better position to be the running mate to Atiku Abubakar come next year. Jimi Agbaje hails from the south west and he would also emerge as potential candidate to become the Vice President.

  • Musiliu Obanikoro

It still looks unclear if Obanikoro defected to the All Progressive Congress from PDP, but, it does not matter at this point in time. He moves along with Bola Tinubu making his chances of becoming Atiku’s running mate very slim. However, it does not take anything to return to the Peoples Democratic Party if called upon to be Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.

  • Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye hails from Kogi State and it looks likely he would emerge as Atiku;s running mate. Though, Dino Melaye has come under heavy criticism because of his past records with the police. He still remains in line to become Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.
