Each time I remember how we met, I smiled to myself and the word ‘fool’ echoes in my ears. Yes, a fool I was because I should have known that men like him are deceitful and should not be trusted.

Talking about trust, how many men are even worth trusting these days? well that’s a rhetorical question. So back to how we met.

It was at a friend’s parents housewarming party, I was persuaded to go by my clique, back then in secondary school, that’s because i was not a party freak.

Well, it turned out to be an awesome party and a memorable one at that, as I met the most charming man I have ever seen in the world. Tall and dark, as he smiled from afar, his set of white teeth shined at me, he dazzled in the white guinea he had on, in fact he could easily pass for an angel only if angels are dark in completion.

Being the bold type, i was asked by my mum’s friend to announce the departure of my friend to the United States as soon as we finished our examination for the session. It was actually a surprise trip meant to mark her sixteenth birthday. Anne Orji was to travel in company of her aunt to the United States for four weeks.

Yes, the announcement was made by me, and I could read disappointment in Anne’s face on hearing the news. Her parents never knew that she already had plans for the holiday, but all the same, Anne left for the US a month after and never returned to Nigeria, as she was made to stay back with her aunt to continue her education.

During the announcement, I caught my dream man smiling sheepishly at Anne and flood of jealousy run through me.

As a matter of fact, that made me ignored him for the rest of the night without even bothering to know his name.

I also intentionally did not inquire about him from Anne until about two weeks after the party. Anne told me he was the son of their former neighbour who died in a ghastly motor accident three years earlier. She also disclosed that her parents had taken up the responsibility of training him…
