A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced an 18-year-old applicant, Anas Sani, to seven months imprisonment for theft.
Sani, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of joint act and theft and begged the court for leniency.
“Please sir, temper justice with mercy, times are hard and no work in the country,” he pleaded.
The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave the convict an option of N9,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes.
Ado said that this punishment would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.
The prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, had told the court that one Okonkwo Ikechukwu of Garki, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on Aug. 5.
Obatomi said that the convict and others now at large, broke into the complainant’s car at Berger roundabout, Abuja when he went to greet a relative.
He said that the convict criminally stole the complainant’s iPhone six plus valued at N200,000.
He said that during police investigation, the convict made confessional statement and the phone was recovered.
The prosecutor said the offences violated the provisions of Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.
