Tale Of Success: Mo Abudu’s Inspirational Story.
Recently, NIGERIAN NEWS published an article on the presidency commemorating and congratulating three iconic Nigerian women on the successful feats they achieved on the international scene viz-a-viz the global stage.
One of these legendary women is Mosunmola Abudu, popularly called in the entertainment industry as Mo Abudu. Mo Abudu is a talk show host, TV producer, media personality, human resources management consultant, entrepreneur and above all, a philanthropist.
Today, NIGERIAN NEWS tells the story behind the veil of the successful Nigerian woman who is making it big in the creative industry, locally and internationally and has been recognized as one of the most powerful and successful women Africa ever produced.
BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION
Mosunmola Abudu is an Ondo state indigene that was born in the United Kingdom. She lived her early life in the United Kingdom. At the age seven, Abudu’s family relocated to Lagos, Nigeria, and resultantly Mo was made to stay with her grandparents who were cocoa farmers at Ondo State. Living with the old grannies, Mosunmola Abudu learned the African culture and heritage.
Mosunmola attended Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School for the earlier part of her education in Nigeria. When she was twelve, she lost her father and shortly after she had to relocate back to the United Kingdom.
She attended Hammersmith County Secondary School and Ridgeway School in Kent where she completed her elementary and secondary education. later on, she went to West Kent College and MidKent College where she obtained her bachelor’s degree and thereafter proceeded to the University of Westminster, London where she obtained a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management.
Mo Abudu is a member of the British Psychological Society, and is consequently qualified in occupational and personality testing.
Mo Abudu had a short-lived marriage with Tokunbo Abudu. The marriage produced two lovely kids, a boy, and a girl. She currently happily married to her career and children.
Mosunmola Abudu started her career as a recruitment consultant in the United Kingdom in 1987. after a couple of years, Mosunmola was promoted to branch manager of the organization she worked for.
in 1990 Mosunmola changed job and started working for another establishment by name Starform Group, where she became the manager of the Corporate Credit Management Exhibition. There she remained up until 1992 when she resigned.
In 1993, Mo Abudu started a new job with Arthur Andersen where she worked for an oil company now formally known as ExxonMobil in Nigeria. She served as the head of Human Resources and Training unit.
She later left the company in the year 2000 to establish her own a private human resources development firm which she named Vic Lawrence & Associates Limited (popularly known as VLA). As she ran her VLA, Abudu started an executive training center which operates at the Protea Hotel, Oakwood Park, Lagos.
By 2005, Mosunmola Abudu began her own Tv talk series ‘Moments with Mo’, which is the first syndicated daily talk show on African regional television. She was the executive producer and anchor of the show.
by 2009, ‘Moments with Mo’ has been aired on M-Net with TV coverage in over forty-eight countries in Africa.The show now also airs on terrestrial and cable TV in other parts of the world. Ather show which she produced was ‘The Debaters’ which was a show aimed at giving Africa a voice in global matters.
Abudu is also the founder of The Inspire Africa Foundation, a non-profit organization which served as an extension of her corporate firm ‘Inspire Africa Ltd’. The organization was majorly based on raising funds to implement society-transforming initiatives.
The Foundation has opened a charity store branded “The Designers Outlet for Charity”, which opened in December 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria. The foundation is also developing a children’s shelter called “The Harbour”. In recognition of her outstanding work in diverse fields especially the media, and her service to humanity, she has been honored with numerous accolades including the entrepreneur of the year award which was given to her by a New York-based magazine.
Mo Abudu established Ebony Life Television a multi-platform broadcaster set to reach Africa’s most important target demographic, the custodians of the present and the future. Ebony Life TV is located at Tinapa Resort, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
Ebony Life TV has been founded with a mission to create Original, Premium and Inspiring content with an African Soul that showcases the best of Africa for a Global Black audience.
Through Ebony Life Films, she’s constantly redefining African cinema, and pushing bold and audacious narratives. Mo is the producer of 2016 box-office record-breaking movie ‘The Wedding Party’ – a movie that endeared itself to critics and fans alike. She is also the producer of the television series ‘Sons of the Caliphate’- a soap opera based on the socio-political lifestyle of Northern Nigeria.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Mo was named by Forbes Media as the ‘First African woman to launch a Pan-Africa TV channel’ in 2013. In the same year, she also made the list of ‘One of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Global TV’ by the Hollywood Reporter.
In 2014, she won the Entrepreneur of the Year at the International Women’s Day forum, in Manhattan, New York, United States. And was further honored with an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Honoris Causa) from Babcock University; Nigeria’s premier private university.
She was also honored as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Women Week in New York in 2016 and by 2017 Abudu was named in FAME Women Awards of Excellence.
And just recently, she was listed among the top 50 women “who are doing extraordinary things on the worldwide stage’’ by the weekly American entertainment magazine, Variety Magazine.
