Pan-African Parliamentarian, Bethel Amadi, Is Dead

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Bethel Nnaemeka Amadi, has passed on at the age of 55. The late Hon Amadi, who represented Mbaitoli/Ikeduru federal constituency of Imo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reportedly died in London after a long battle with soft tissue cancer.

The three-term lawmaker in the lower legislative chamber was also the immediate past president of the Pan-African Parliament between 2012–2015. He also served as the chief whip of the House under former Speaker Patricia Etteh. He was elected president of the Pan-African Parliament. Prior to that, Hon. Amadi was appointed a member of PAP in 2007 and was consequently elected first vice president of the Parliament.

As a lawmaker, Amadi chaired the committees on Aviation, and National Planning and Economic Development respectively and was member of several committees. He was also a member of the Planning Committee for the six-nation Inter-parliamentary conference on Lake Chad Basin. The astute lawmaker was born in Owerri on April 25, 1964. He attended Federal Government College, Warri, and proceeded to the University of Jos where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Law. He attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and was called to Bar in 1986. Soon after his national youth service, the late Amadi took up a job with an oil and gas service company, Christaben Group Ltd, Kaduna, as a legal/administrative staff and rose to the position of acting general manager of Hunting Oilfield Services Ltd, a joint venture between Hunting Plc UK and Christaben Group Ltd.

Reacting to his demise, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, extolled Amadi’s virtues and described him as a “resourceful and courageous parliamentarian”. He said, “Hon. Amadi was remarkable at every venture he undertook. He distinguished himself as a lawmaker and displayed a high sense of patriotism while serving as a principal officer of the House of Representatives and president of Pan-African Parliament where his representation of Nigeria was faultless. He always discharged his responsibilities with competence and distinction”. The late parliamentarian is survived by his wife, Barr. Mabel Amadi, and children.

Rt. Hon Bethel Nnaemeka Amadi, a chieftain of the PDP, former member of the House of Representatives and President of African Parliament reportedly died Sunday evening in an disclosed hospital in London, England.

The health of the three-term House of Representatives member for Mbaitoli/Ikeduru constituency had been deteriorating in recent times as a result of a stroke he had suffered which had kept him bedridden for several months.

A close family member, who confirmed the death of the 55-year-old former Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives, said that he died in London where he has been treated.
