A 31-year-old bus driver, Jamiu Adeoye, who bit a police officer’s nose and chest, was on Monday sentenced to one day community service.
Magistrate A.M. Davies of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, said that the convict, Adeoye, should sweep the court premises for a day.
Adeoye, whose address was not given, had earlier been arraigned on Aug.13 on a count charge of assault.
He had pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of N200, 000 with two sureties, who must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, Adeoye changed his plea to guilty when he could not meet the bail conditions.
The magistrate consequently found him guilty as charged and sentenced him.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 9 at 7.40p.m at P and T, Obalande, Lagos.
Osuji said the accused unlawfully assaulted the complainant, Insp. Joseph Tirven, by biting his nose and chest.
He said that the complainant tried to stop the accused from flouting the traffic law.
The prosecutor said the accused got angry and attacked the officer.
The offence contravenes Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
