Court Docked Driver And Friend Over Alleged Theft Of Jewellry Worth N1m

A driver and his friend, who allegedly broke the side window of a Rav4 Jeep and stole a bag containing jewellery worth N1million appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in  Lagos on Monday.

The accused– Amos Tyohena, 35; and Ademola Pedro, 39; is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, willful damage and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, the accused committed the offences on June 30 at 12:45 a.m., at House 30, Iru Resettlement Palace Road, Lekki in Lagos State.

She said the accused unlawfully damaged the side window mirror of a Rav4 brand with Registration No. MUS 325 AP and stole the jewellery belonging to the complainants, Mr and Mrs Edet Essien.

“ Essien’s wife got to where her husband’s vehicle was parked the previous night and discovered that it had been vandalized and her bag disappeared.

“The security guards attached to the estate were notified, and the accused were later caught with some of the stolen jewellery,” she said.

Ajibode said that the damaged side mirror was valued at N25, 000.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287, 338 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The NIGERIA NEW reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year imprisonment for offenders.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 6 for the mention.
