According to him, “the necessary laid down guidelines must have been breached by the developers hence the demolition of the structure by the FCT Administration.”
In his words, “If people did not follow the laid down guidelines that is when the development control unit act to correct anomalies. Whenever you see development control put down a building, they must have done so to correct the distortion of the master plan,” he stated.
According to the counsel of Patience Jonathan, Emmanuel Anene, “Sometime ago, people from the Development Control came to the site, alleging that there was no approval for the building. We met them at their office and showed them the approval, which they accepted. We thought that the matter was over.”
“They had earlier gone to court with an application for forfeiture of the property to the government which they failed to achieve at the Lagos High Court,” he continued.
“So, we were surprised that a team came in this afternoon without notifying us to remove the structure.”
Contrary to their claims, the Director of Development Control, Mr. Muktar Usman, stated that prior to the demolition, a notice was served and the building had no approval.
He also revealed that other buildings in the area were also demolished as it was not just that of the former President that was demolished.
Mukhtar also revealed that during the demolition the staff members of the Development Control Department were allegedly assaulted.
According to one of Mrs. Jonathan’s lawyers, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), “I have heard about the demolition but I have not received full details.”
Describing the action of the FCTA as evil Adedipe said, “This is where we find ourselves in Nigeria today; where government agencies resort to self-help like herdsmen without recourse to the court of law. It is unfortunate.”
No legal decision have been taken so far on the issue by the wife of the immediate past President of Nigeria.
