FG Launches 5 New National Associations To Boost Agric Production, Commodity Trade

The Federal Government said on Thursday that the official inauguration of five new national commodity associations was aimed at developing the agriculture sector by increasing production and marketing of products.

The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, made this known in Abuja at the Official Launching and Presentation of Certificate of Registration to the new associations.

The five commodity associations are Kenaf Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (KPPMAN), Pumpkin Growers, Exports and Marketers Association of Nigeria (PUGMAN), and the Federation of Snail Farmers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria (FESMAN).

The others include the Cowpea/Beans Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (CFPMAN) and the National Association of Hides and Skin Dealers (NAHSD).

The minister said that the official recognition granted them would enable them to join the Federal Government in promoting the consumption of made-in-Nigeria products.

She expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s development partners for the support they had been extending to the commodity associations in the country.

She said: “The intention of the government is to further spur the access windows of opportunities.

‘’I am convinced that with today’s launch, big commodity associations will join government programmes to identify with the made-in-Nigeria Initiative of the

Federal Government to enlighten Nigerians on the benefits of using local products for household and industrial purposes.

‘’The sustainable increase of the use of these commodities in Nigeria will lead to massive increase in employment, income and will improve health.’’

Responding on behalf of the five associations, Mr Shitu Kabiru Mohammed, the National President, Cowpea/Beans Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for availing farmers of its Anchor Borrowers scheme, and the ministry particularly, for the opportunities given them, amongst others.

He said that farmers would take advantage of the “great opportunity’’ offered them as represented by the launching of the associations and presentation of Certificate of Registration, to create employment and put food on the tables of Nigerians.

“We should be able to export our commodities and stop the importation of goods into the country.

“The Federal Government under President Mohammed Buhari has given us the assurance to explore in the agricultural sector,’’ he said.
