NAFDAC Says Illegal Importation Is Responsible For Drug Abuse
Following the issues of drug abuse associated with codeine tramadol and some others, the Federal Government have ordered the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to return to the ports.
The instruction which is to be carried out immediately is to stop the unlawful importation of certain banned substances.
NIGERIA NEWS recalled that the NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has attributed drug abuse to unlawful importation of the products.
This was made known in a statement which disclosed that “the directive to return to the ports was to effectively control the importation of unregulated products, falsified and substandard drugs, unwholesome foods, narcotic drugs and hazardous chemical substances and foods.”
“NAFDAC received the notice on May 16, 2019, in a letter dated March 29, 2019, from the office of the Vice-President, as part of the PEBEC reforms.”
Adeyeye further said that “recently, many Nigerians were ill, most likely due to unwholesome foods, drugs and abuse of narcotics and controlled substances, such as codeine, tramadol and pentazocine.”
