How Anthony Joshua lost three belts to ‘underdog’ Ruiz

Nigerian-born British boxer, Anthony Joshua lost his first professional fight to in the United States to an underdog, Andy Ruiz Jr, who produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of heavyweight boxing to rip Joshua’s IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles from him.

In a remarkable way, the fight which held at New York’s Madison Square Garden, witnessed Joshua being floored by Ruiz four times en route to a seventh-round stoppage, stunning the spectators in the famous arena.

Joshua was a 1-25 favourite with bookmakers, with 22 wins – 21 by knockout under his locker before the fight has now joined the likes of Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson as dominant champions to suffer losses which brought the sport to a standstill.

“I got beaten by a good fighter,” said 29-year-old Joshua. “It will be interesting to see how far he goes, but this is all part of the journey.

“He’s a champion for now, I shall return,” he said.

To show that his victory was no fluke, the American, who was floored in the third round gave a picture of a fighter who looked shattered from an early stage.

His recovery created an electric buzz amongst the 19,000 or so in the arena in the seventh round nth round, when Joshua touched down under a flurry of shots again, the game looked up.

The Brit fell down seconds later on all fours again and spat his gumshield out, perhaps to buy time, which he simply did not have, as the referee waved off the bout.

Ruiz, an American born but with Mexican parents, becomes Mexico’s first heavyweight world champion, just as he said he would with just six weeks notice to the bout.

The first lady of Kebbi state, Zainab Bagudu has condemned the former acting Chief Justice of the state, Justice Asabe Saratu for not retiring from her position honourably.

“As a female born to parents who both belong to the legal profession, I loudly celebrated the rise of Justice Asabe Karatu as the first female Chief Justice of Kebbi state. More so, I attended the university with her daughter. Now, I totally condemn her selfish attempt to hang on to position instead of retiring honourably.

Zainab who pointed that her allegations have brought about undeserved insults and criticism one her husband, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and others, noted that sadly, that is one of the burdens of leadership.

“It is worrisome that as a Nation, we allow religion to quickly divide us rather than use reason to search for reasons to avoid conflict.

“The statement below will not clear every mind, but it is necessary to set the records straight and we owe it to our children to always do what is right. Most of all, We should ALWAYS try to be bigger than our personal ambition. ”
