A former chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Imo State, Dr Alex Obi has revealed that the ignorant and greedy nature of some Igbo leaders are the reasons why the ethnic group continued to lag behind in Nigeria.

The former chairman made this disclosure when speaking with reporters in Owerri over some trending national issues especially those affecting the Igbo people.

In the words of Dr. Obi, “Ndigbo have been severally shortchanged in the past”, as a result of what he described as  “ignorance and greed on the part of those who claim to represent them as leaders.”

Obi explains that such leaders are only concerned about their personal gains and as such take whatever is being dished out to them by leaders of other ethnic groups, noting that hence such would no longer be tolerated by the Igbos.

Quoting him, “These class of leaders practise politics of individualism and bread and butter. By this token, they were enticed with contracts and powerless appointments. For now, anybody wanting Igbo votes must negotiate for it.”

Dr. Obi further advised the Igbos not to give room for anyone to trample on their rights, especially in the political arena. In his words, “I urge Ndigbo not to be cowed by any person, group or circumstances, in their bid to take their rightful position in Nigeria.”

He emphasised that Igbos are also entitled to whatever resources that are being gotten on the Nigerian soil and that the Igbos have equal rights with all other ethnic groups in the country. “Enough is enough. There is no doubt that Ndigbo is not only major stakeholders in Nigeria, but should also be treated as such.”

He urged the Igbos to come together and unite as one in order to be able to claim what rightfully belongs to them.

In Obi’s words: “Ndigbo can take a cue from Anambra State and improve on their welfare. The government and people of Anambra State have been working together and investing massively in infrastructure, industries, agriculture, education and other sectors, without making noise.”

NIGERIA NEWS further gathered that the former Imo PDP chairman has abandoned the party and joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
