INEC Relays New Election Timetable Which Covers 36 Years
In a bid to ensure that future general elections in the country are not delayed, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has relayed election dates today for the next 36 years.
The election dates as released by INEC would begin from the year 2019 to 2055.
The timetable was relayed by the INEC boss himself, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a consultative meeting which he held with heads of political parties in the Federal Capital Territory today.
In the words of the INEC boss, “In 2019, the dates are Feb. 16 and March 2; in 2023, the dates are Feb. 18 and March 4. “In 2027, the dates are Feb. 20 and March 6; in 2031, it is Feb.15 and March 1.”
“In 2035, it is Feb. 17 and March 3; in 2039, it is Feb.19 and March 5 and in 2043, it will hold on Feb. 21 and March 7. “In 2047, it is Feb.15 and March 2; in 2051, it is Feb.18 and March 1; in 2055, it is Feb. 20 and March 6.”
Speaking further, he pointed out that across the globe elections date are not being guessed as everyone already knows the date which they are to cast their votes.
He also discloses that the reason for the releasing the future election dates is to ensure certainty in election schedule so as to help the commission and all concern agencies have more time to prepare towards the dates.
Yakubu appealed to political parties to ensure that they meet all necessary requirements and avoid intra and inter-party conflicts in order for the coming elections to be conducted smoothly.
He advised parties to ensure that their members are well educated on the dangers involved in violent acts during an election as he also welcomes some newly registered political parties by the commission.
The INEC boss gave kudo to the different political parties whose representatives were present at the event over the recently conducted elections in some states as he noted that the elections went smoothly and were crisis-free.
