INEC Discovers 299 Names Of Unqualified Persons In Voters’ Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed today that it has discovered a total of  299 foreign names in the voters’ register.

This disclosure was made by the INEC National Chairman, Mahamood Yakubu at a consultative meeting of the commission with security agencies in Abuja.

According to the INEC boss, the names were discovered following the information the commission got from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has disclosed today that it has discovered a total of  299 foreign names in the voters’ register.

This disclosure was made by the INEC National Chairman, Mahamood Yakubu at a consultative meeting of the commission with security agencies in Abuja.

According to the INEC boss, the names were discovered following the information the commission got from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

Yakubu emphasized that the right to vote and be voted for in the country is an exclusive right of Nigerian citizens alone.

He further disclose that his commission is now corroborating with the Nigeria Immigration service and security authorities to ensure that only bonafide Nigerians registers in order to participated in the forthcoming election in the country.

In his words, “Those who are below the age of 18, aliens, those registered in absentia, those barred by statutory regulations from registering as voters are not qualified.”

“Persons who do not ordinarily reside, work or originate from the area covered by the registration are ineligible.”

“We will continue to thoroughly scrutinize registrants in the ongoing exercise in order to ensure that only eligible registrants get registered.”

He assured Nigerians that the forthcoming election would be free and fair.
