INEC gives update on Okorocha's certificate of return

The decision concerning the latest letter that was written by the incumbent governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, to challenge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its power to withhold his Certificate of Return will be taken after a meeting which is schedule for next week.

The candidate of the ruling party All Progressive Congress (APC) in the February 23 2019 elections for Imo West Senatorial district, Rochas Okorocha, has challenged INEC for withholding his Certificate of Return.

Rochas Okorocha was declared the winner of the election by the presiding officer. According to INEC, that declaration was made under duress and for this reason, his Certificate of Return was withheld.

Okorocha wrote the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, among other measures to reclaim his mandate, insisting that it was unlawful for the Commission to refuse him a Certificate of Return as the people’s elect of Imo west Senatorial district.

The comissioner for information and voter education, Festus Okoye responded in Abuja yesterday, stating that both parties were in court and that the commission’s chairman would meet with commissioners to deliberate on the issue and take a decision concerning the next line of action.

Festus Okoye said “INEC chairman will meet next week with Commissioners to deliberate on the latest letter written by Okorocha and take a look at the issue again. Both parties are in court, but the INEC chairman is outside the country and most of the commissioners are on duty.”

According to the INEC Commissioner, Festus Okoye, the commission was not bothered about comments made by the Rochas Okorocha on the issue, it would however not take any action outside the law.

“The case is in court but we believe what we are doing is in accordance with the law,” Okoye added.
