It was learnt that the Saturday attack, which was the second in three weeks, was led by a notorious militant leader of the Iceland Cult group, Akaninyene Jumbo, alias Iso Akpafid, from Ikot Ibekwe Village in the neighbouring Ukanafun Local Government Area.

In a chat with journalists, one of the eyewitnesses, who did not want his name in print, narrated how the attack took place.

The eyewitness said, “We were just standing here to plan the funeral of our in-law from Nto Unang Village after we returned from a vigil. Suddenly, we saw five motorbikes with armed men. Before we could escape, they had opened fire on us. Some of us were lucky to escape unhurt, but our friend, Udeme Dickson, was shot in the head and chest, while others fled with bullet wounds.

“The entire wall of the Udo Unwa Okpo compound, where we stood to discuss our movement back to Nto Unang Village for the funeral, was completely shattered by the bullets fired randomly by the cultists.”

The injured victims of the Udianga Enem cult attack were said to have been taken to an undisclosed hospital in Uyo, where doctors were said to be battling to extract bullets from their body.

Three weeks ago, the Head of Udianga Enem community, Chief Mendie Udoekoriko, had expressed concern about continued cult attacks in the area, after the same group of cultists attacked the village, killing four persons, including a pastor, Mr. Uwem Ananki.

“Currently, the entire village is completely deserted, giving the hoodlums enough room to break into people’s homes to steal agriculture produce, livestock, clothes, cash and household properties,” the monarch said.

He appealed to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, to come to the aid of his people, saying that they were all living on exile in places like Iwukem, Utu Etim Ekpo, Ika, Abak, Uyo, and Ikot Ekpene.

Residents also told Southern City News that rural dwellers had to leave the affected communities in their numbers, as the council chairman, Mr. Udeme Eduo, who hails from the area, relocated his aged parents to Uyo.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Etim Ekpo, who simply identified himself as Mr. Chris, said politicians had been frustrating police efforts to arrest the situation.

“It is a very pathetic situation because the entire area is deserted. When the incident happened, we went there with over 10 police patrol teams, but sadly, we could only see few old men and women who were barely able to walk.

“The local government chairman has not been cooperating with the police and no one is ready to volunteer information. They know these cultists, but they are not willing to provide information on where they could be located.

“Our work is being hampered by lack of political will to enforce serious clampdown on the suspects.       We are not the only one with the knowledge of what is going on in Etim Ekpo. The police high command, including the Inspector-General Police and the state police headquarters are aware,” he said.

He urged community and political leaders to partner security agencies in order to guarantee safer environment for socio-economic activities as well as for government policies and programmes to thrive.

“The police, no matter how sophisticated, cannot work alone to achieve the desired results of guaranteeing a peaceful and crime-free society. So, the people must work with the police,” he said.

How He Isa Akpafid Was finally Caught

Later, the new youths’ leader was also killed penultimate Friday, while a close associate of the late monarch, Madam Mayen Emmanson, was kidnapped and taken to unknown destination two days after.

“Up till now, there is no information on the whereabouts of the woman. The kidnappers have not called to negotiate for any ransom, meaning she should be presumed dead”, the Village Council Secretary, Udoikpong, lamented.

In the neigbouring, Ikot Ibekwe community, the village head, Chief Sunday Udoikpe, it was learnt, also escaped death by the whiskers.

He fled into exile when the rampaging cultist was unleashed on him, allegedly by a notorious gang leader, Akaninyene Jumbo, popularly called Iso Akpafid, who is also the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Chairman in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

He is alleged to be the major sponsor of several politically motivated killings in the area, using his connections and political influence.

“Currently, the two communities have remained without any legitimate authorities to regulate socio-political and economic direction of the area in line with the demands of their offices”, Otobong, the eldest son of the late monarch disclosed.

Lamenting his ordeal from his hideout, Otobong, who just graduated from Enugu State University, said with killing of his father, the onus was now on him to take care of the family.

“I was not at home when my father was killed, I was in Uyo, while mother was in Port Harcourt. My mother only called and told me assailants came to our house and shot my father dead.

“I graduated last year, and as the eldest son of six children, my younger sister is at Akwa Ibom State University and the remaining four have finished from Secondary Schools, to further education will be a big problem to me because my father was the only bread winner; we all depended on him”, he lamented.

He blamed the Police for not doing a thorough job to fish out the real culprits, pointing out that “the Police knew the real killers, but they are arresting the wrong people”.

The State Commissioner of Police (CP), Don Awunah, confirmed the incidents, saying he had since drafted his men to the troubled areas to restore calm.

Awunah, the immediate past Force Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), who spoke via phone at the weekend on the matter, said the problem was not only peculiar to Ukanafun, but the entire Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.

He said: “We have gone into it. From my preliminary investigation, it is cult-related killings; we have arrested some suspects we caught with firearms. In Ukanafun, we have deployed a crack team to put an end to the killings. The problem is not only in Ukanafun, I think it covers the entire Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District because all the report we got from the area are cult-related”.

The Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Abasiono Udomfu, who also confirmed the killings, said he and his council were currently holding stakeholders meeting with a view to ensuring the return of normalcy to the troubled areas.

He confirmed that the Police have acted promptly by drafting surveillance and anti-crimes squad to the area for effective surveillance to forestall further killings and law breaches by hooligans
