Italian Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta reaffirmed Italy’s support for Lebanon after her arrival in the country on Monday, the National News Agency reports.
“Our country is always keen on providing continuous support for Lebanon,’’ Trenta said after her meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
“Lebanon and Italy enjoy very special historical relations, “ she noted.
Berri praised the role that Italy was playing in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) forces in Southern Lebanon.
On July 12, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed the Italian Major-General Stefano Del Col as the new Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL.
Trenta is also expected to meet with President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri later in the day.
