I Have Never Asked Anyone To Intervene In My Matter Before The Court
A former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has refuted claims that his corruption case at the court has been hanging since he started campaigning for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in the 2019 presidential race. He made this known in an article published in the Daily Sun on Monday
The article is a response to the article of former presidential spokesman, Segun Adeniyi, which allegedly accused him of “gallivanting” all over the country for Buhari because there is an “anti-corruption” case against him.
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chieftain, the claims are false, pointing out that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), is vigorously prosecuting his case. He also stated that he has never asked anyone to intervene on his behalf in the matter before the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Recall that the EFCC had last month through its counsel in the corruption case of about N3bn, Mr Rotimi Jacobs, told the court that it was not deliberately delaying the trial, stating that, “The case was filed since 2007 and the defendants challenged the jurisdiction of the court up until 2015, before the Supreme Court made a final pronouncement on the issue. I cannot be forced to close my case because we need to bring the facts before the court”.
Part of the essay reads, “How can a man who has been in court for 11 years, and whose case is still being vigorously prosecuted and a robust defence rising up to the challenge, be said to be doing what he is doing because of alleged corruption charges?
“The truth is, I have never intervened nor asked anyone to intervene on my behalf in the judicial process. I remain a firm believer in the rule of law and would rather the judicial process was fully exhausted in this matter.”
“I am convinced I haven’t stolen a dime while I was in government. I believe many people, including Segun, know that I am being persecuted for my principled and dogged stance against former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s evil third term agenda.”
“On my ongoing matter with the EFCC, that matter is still being prosecuted and it would be sub judice to speak extensively on it. However, I would like to state that, in criminal jurisprudence, cases must be proved beyond reasonable doubt to achieve conviction.”
“Until that is achieved, I remain a bona fide free citizen of Nigeria and as such free to enjoy my right of association, right to free movement and right to hold opinion, no matter how contrary.”
“I have also not interfered with the on-going trial and at no point has my trial been adjourned because I was not available in court. If you check the records of court, I have always been present to face trial. I even had to cut short my business trips to be in court.”
“So, to make insinuations, like Segun did, is akin to attempting to force the hand of court. It also represents an effort to blackmail me to silence.”
Kalu, also reiterated in the article, that he has no apologies for campaigning for Buhari’s re-election, stating that it is what he believes in and it is his inalienable right to hold and express an opinion or belief.
He said, “I believe that Buhari’s re-election in 2019 will pave way for president of Igbo extraction in 2023!” he said.
Recall that NIGERIA NEWS reported recently that Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, called out the chieftain warning him not to visit his state to solicit for support and votes for President Buhari.
June 12: Tinubu, other opportunists begged for appointment from Abacha – Bode George
Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended Kola Abiola, the son of the late MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the Jun 12 1993 election, who alleged that former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other “June 12 opportunists.” approached former military dictator, Sani Abacha to beg for appointment after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
Speaking with Punch in reaction to Kola’s allegations, George, a former military administrator, hailed Kola for stating the facts even as he lamented that many opportunists were seeking to twist history.
Kola said after Tinubu had lost out that he decided to join hands with the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) to fight for the actualisation of the June 12 mandate.
“It is true that Tinubu went to beg for a commissioner position. He was in the Villa and Gen. Oladipo Diya is a witness. He (Tinubu) said he wanted to be a deputy to a military administrator and when all that didn’t work, he went into his activism.”
The PDP chieftain, who lauded Kola for deciding to make a documentary of the June 12 saga said he must not be victimised for saying the truth since, as the first son of MKO, and an insider.
“Most of what Kola said is true. He spoke from the heart and he was trying to set the records straight in the face of the many narratives. He had been looking for who would help to recognise the June 12 saga so that his father wouldn’t have died in vain.
“In the course of this, he had bottled up so much. He went through a lot, having lost his mother and family businesses during the struggle. So, he was setting the records straight so that people would not rewrite history,” he said.
Speaking on the lesson learnt from the June 12 saga, George said the lessons must go beyond declaring a holiday or immortalising MKO.
“Now, June 12 has been adopted as a national holiday but have we learnt any serious lesson from it? Have we done anything to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated?
“Yes, people are pontificating and trying to use it as a political tool but believe we have not learnt anything,” George said.
I don’t do other people’s wives, Fani-Kayode lambastes Bagudu’s wife
Former Aviation, Femi Fami-Kayode has lambasted wife of Kebbi state governor, Zainab Bagudu for saying all he ever wanted was attention.
This is in reaction to question asked by Fani-Kayode on the sack of acting Chief Justice of Kebbi, Asabe Karatu by the governor after reporting the state government to the National Judicial Commission (NJC) alleging that the Kebbi state National Assembly refused to confirm her appointment because she is a Christian.
The Kebbi first lady had responded to Fani-Kayode telling Twitter users not to mind the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as all he wanted was attention.
“Pls don’t bother answering Femi. That’s what he wants. Attention,” she tweeted.

Recall that governor had defended his action during the swearing in of a new acting Chief Justice of the state, Justice Mohammed Sulaiman, saying Karatu couldn’t be confirmed as the state substantive CJ because of some error on her birth certificate.
He added that he even pleaded with the members twice, which was rejected and the NJC was notified on the action taken.
