The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad, has called on Nigerians to imbibe the habit of extending hands of assistance to the less privileged in the society.
Ahmad made the call in Omu-Aran on Thursday while distributing some food items and cash donation to no fewer than 50 beneficiaries of his New Year Empowerment Scheme.
Ahmad, represented by his Special Assistant on Media, Malam Shuaib Abdulkadir, said that the donation was his own way of giving back to the society, especially the underprivileged.
He said the donation, being the fourth in the series, was part of the measures aimed at improving the living standard of people, irrespective of ethno-religion or political affiliations.
According to him, the gesture is targeted at bringing succour to widows, destitute and some parents for them to be able to cater for their children’s academic needs.
Ahmad said it was the responsibility of well-meaning individuals and groups, particularly those at the helms of affairs to always remember the poor for them to have a sense of belonging.
The speaker said that only the collective efforts of stakeholders would bring about the desired socioeconomic transformation of the citizens.
He promised that donation to these categories of Nigerians, especially at the grassroots, would be sustained as a way of increasing their purchasing powers.
Commenting, Prophet Christopher Owolabi, the General Overseer, Christ Apostolic Church, Ori-Oke Irapada, Omu-Aran, said that the annual donation was unprecedented and timely.
Owolabi described the speaker’s kind gesture as a mark of his love and affection for the citizenry, irrespective of ethnic, political and religious affiliation.
“It is our sincere prayer that such gesture will continue to have positive impact on the socio-economic development of people of the state,’’ he said.
Mr Azeez Adelodun and Mrs Esther Igbayilola, both beneficiaries, lauded the donor for his foresight, urging others to emulate the kind gesture of the speaker.
