A Kubwa Grade I Area Court on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old labourer, Dauda Bala, to 18 months in prison for stealing a car.
The judge, Mr Abdulwahab Mohammed, however, gave the convict an option of N200, 000 fine, with a warning to be of good behaviour.
He further ordered that Bala should pay N800, 000 to the complainant, Peter Onah, as compensation.
Bala was convicted and sentenced over charges of theft and mischief.
The prosecutor, Urom Otu, had earlier told the court that the complainant reported the matter at the Divisional Police Headquarters at Dutse-Alhaji on July 21.
He said the complainant parked his Sienna Toyota car in front of his house at Dutse Alhaji on the night of July 20.
Otu further said the complainant woke up in the morning on July 21 and realised that his car had been stolen.
He said police investigations into the matter on Aug.14 revealed that Bala stole the car and had an accident with it on his way to Panteka, Kaduna State.
The prosecutor said Bala was on his way to sell the car before the accident, incurring a damage of N1 million.
He said the offence contravened Sections 287 and 327 of the Penal Code.
Bala had pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
