The UEFA Champions League and the football world in general have seen a lot of come-backs over the decades but not many of these come-backs could be compared to Liverpool’s unbelievable and spirited performance tonight against Barcelona
It was a night full of drama and surprises as Jurgen Klopp-led team invoked the spirit of Istanbul and bashed Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to progress to their second UEFA Champions League final in succession winning 4-3 on aggregate after loosing the first leg at Camp Nou by 3 goals margin a week ago. This great come back is however against the expectation of many football analysts and followers.
Liverpool came into the game hoping to overturn a 3-goal deficit as a result of their loss in the first leg of the tie. While Barcelona came into the tie with the hope of consolidating their first leg victory knowing that at least a draw of any kind would be enough to see them through to the UCL final for the first time in 4 years.
Jurgen Klopp’s men started the game brightly playing with high intensity and creating chances. Despite missing two of their star forwards in Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firminho, Liverpool soon broke the deadlock within the first 45 minutes through Divock Origi who pounced on a rebound after Marc-Andre ter Stegen failed to effectively deal with Jordan Henderson’s shot.
The Second half started the same way the first half ended. Before the hour mark, Liverpool had made it 3-0 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate courtesy of a quick brace from Geoginio Widjnaldum who was introduced into the game at the start of the second half.
With the game tied at 3-3 on aggregate, Liverpool made life hard for Lionel Messi and his teammates as the Spanish champions unusually found it cumbersome to make five complete passes in succession due to the high pressing and space marking of their opponent.
The turn around was complete in the 79th minute when that man again Divock Origi who has been bang in form for Liverpool of late capitalized on Barcelona switching off from a corner which was quickly taken by Alexander-Arnold for the Belgian to tap the ball home and completed his brace to give Liverpool the ultimate victory of the night.
The win means Liverpool are the first English team since Manchester United ( 2008 and 2009) to make it into two consecutive/successive UEFA Champions League final and they will play either Ajax or Tottenham in Madrid on 1 June.
