The nanny, a Namibian, is now being faced with court charges of child abuse, assault, and attempted murder after Theron reported her to the authorities, presenting video evidence of the act.

In the footage, the nine-month-old baby Laila is seen being rough-handled by her nanny.

“It was very emotional watching it. I refused to sleep, eat or drink for a couple of days afterwards. It’s difficult to imagine how long this has been going on. I can see Laila is so, so broken after everything,” Theron told Network24.

Theron, the mother of the child, reports that she noticed some bruises from rough-handling on baby Laila’s neck and on her shoulders and began suspecting that things were not going right.

“After that I sat at work, thinking about my daughter the entire day. That’s when I decided to install cameras so that I could see what was happening when I’m not at home.”

Shocked after watching the footage, she immediately laid a charge at the police station.

“It was quite a process, as I had to confirm with a mediator what it would mean if I made the recordings without her (the nanny’s) knowledge. The police were initially hesitant about the charges, but wanted to arrest the woman immediately after seeing the footage.”

As Theron reports, the nanny made her appearance in court on Monday where the state added the charge of attempted murder to the already existing charges that the nanny was faced with.

A spokesperson for the police also confirmed that the Namibian police are aware of the incident but were not speaking to the foreign media about it. Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, Namibia;s head police spokesperson, was not available to make comments either.

“I don’t want her near my child ever again, or to pose a threat to other children. What happened was horrible to witness. I realised Laila has nightmares,” said Theron.

The young Laila now attends a kindergarten during the daytime. Theron, however has not let the incident get the better of her. she does not believe that all nannies are bad and she even says that she may yet consider employing another nanny in the future. She says that she received immense support during the case, especially after following her release of the footage on social media.

“It was comforting to see how many people supported us. Thanks to everyone, family, friends, and strangers, it means a great deal.”
