Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has announced a research grant for postgraduate students in astronomy instituted by oil mogul, Mr Chukwuka Ezenma.
Dr Bonaventure Okere, Acting Director CBSS said on Thursday at its Space Centre Week and Exhibition, held in Nsukka, Enugu State.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the theme of the Exhibition was: `Basic Space Science for Development.’
According to Okere the CBSS Research Grant was part of the centre’s effort to galvanise Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for human capital development in the country.
According to him, the research grant will foster the study of astronomy and physics as well as create awareness for students to diversify into that science sector.
He said that CBSS manages the research funds for the benefit of deserving applicants within the country and the continent at large.
Prof. Ignatius Madu, Chairman of the Research Grant Committee, said Ezenma instituted grants for postgraduate students from Africa on basic Space Science and related discipline like Electrical Electronic Engineering and Communications.
Madu said it was initiated to encourage young Africans to go into Space Science.
“We are encouraging young people to take up courses in that area and create more awareness about the importance of space science.
“Over time there have been scientists in the area but we want to encourage more people,” Madu said.
The committee chairman said that this was the first time Ezenma was coming up with such initiative, stressing that the committee would select deserving students after assessing them.
He said that five students would be selected in the first batch and each given a grant of N100,000 expected to cover their tuition.
According to him, the committee will increase the number of beneficiaries in subsequent years.
