Nigerian Farmer Laments Indifference Of Stakeholders To Promote Dry Season Farming

A Farmer, Mr Yusuf Tijani, on Monday lamented the seeming indifference of stakeholders to promoting dry season farming to develop the nation’s economy.

Tijani told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran, Kwara, that dry season could grow the economy with the right implements, methods and encouragement from relevant stakeholders.

According to him, the practice whereby only farmers with financial capabilities of irrigating their farms during dry season venture into dry season farming is not too impressive.

Tijani, who described dry season farming as a costly enterprise, said that the cost of setting up a standard irrigation facility had gone beyond the reach of subsistence farmers.

“This should not be so if the agricultural revolution is to have any significant impact in the country.

“During the dry season there is less work to do on the farm because the ground is hard and even the grasses are dry.

“What we are doing presently is planting yam seeds and we started it during the just ended rainfall. We need to do this before the ground becomes too hard to dig.

“Because when it does, we will have to wait for the next raining season which is next year,’’ he said.

According to him, those yet to plant their yams are those with farmlands beside the river called `Akuo’ in Yoruba.

“They have access to abundant water throughout the dry season and this is the yam that is first harvest during the New Year.

“What I am saying in essence is that there is the need for stakeholders’ collective responsibility toward promoting dry season through more access to credit facility for the benefit of all,’’ Tijani said.

He called on governments at all levels to assist Nigerian farmers in maximising their benefits as regards dry season farming.

“When this is done diligently, Nigeria and Nigerians will be the best for it as it will go a long way in actualising the agriculture policy of the present administration in the country,’’ Tijani said.
