Following the infernal incident, Igwe was charged to court by the state government and she now stands on trial.
The grievous assault which was reported to have occurred in the Agunfoye area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, left the boy with serious skin damages to his back and arm.
But for the intervention of timely neighbours who heard the loud screams of the boy, Chimobi, after he had been set on fire by his aunt and rushed to the rescue, the fire could have claimed the boy’s life. Chimobi was then taken to a hospital where he was given treatment for fo the sheer damage that had been done to his body by the fire.
The director of the Office of Public Defence in the state, Mrs Olubukola Salami, told Punch that Chimobi, had been taken into protective custody so that he could be better cared for by the state. She said that the same would have been done for Igwe’s four-month-old baby, whom she was still nursing, but that there was a nursing arena provided in the Kirikiri Prisons, where she was being detained and so there would be no need to separate her child from her.
The accused, who has been arraigned by the state and charged with counts of grievous bodily harm under section 254 of the Criminal Code of Lagos, 2011, has been granted bail with a requirement of N500,000 with two sureties in like-sum. Having not met the bail conditions, however, she has remained in police detention.
Salami also said, following case, that Gift had become notorious for the abusive act, which attracted involvement from a large crowd of residents in her community to the courthouse on the day of her arraignment.
