NIGERIA NEWS have gathered from reports that Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India, Officials said.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind administered Justice Gogoi the oath of office at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan.
“Justice Ranjan Gogoi was today sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of country. “The top court which usually assembles at 10:30 a.m. (local time) will start operations at 12:00 noon with Justice Gogoi at the helm,’’ an official said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some of his cabinet ministers including Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad were present on the occasion.
Justice Gogoi succeeds Justice Dipak Misra who retired as chief justice of India on Tuesday.
Justice Gogoi is the first person from India’s northeast to become the chief justice of the country.
Officials said he will have tenure of over 13 months and will retire on Nov. 17, 2019.
