Reasons ASUU Embarked on Indefinite Nationwide Strike

Published

on

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that they have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike action with immediate effect as from November 4th.

ASUU made the decision to embark on the indefinite strike while they held an emergency meeting on Sunday November 4. However, this is somewhat a coincidence because as at the time ASUU has embarked on this strike, the Nigeria Labour Congress is as well planning and preparing to also commence their own nationwide strike tomorrow which is Tuesday 6th November over a disagreement between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Federal Government on the proposed N30,000 minimum wage.

The ASUU strike is set to begin with immediate effect as from today as stated by the ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi. The ASUU President also stated out the reasons why they have decided to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect.

One of the reasons why ASUU has come out to announce an indefinite strike action nationwide is because of the failure on the part of the government to honour the Memorandum of Understanding, which they signed between ASUU as a body and the federal government in the year 2017.

Recall that ASUU as a body embarked on strike last year but the government having promised them a lot, called off the strike. As it stands, the government is yet to keep to their promise and that is why the nationwide strike has taken place.

Also, another reason as to why ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike action nationwide is because of the poor funding of Universities by the Federal Government. In addition to that, there is also an alleged plan by the federal government to increase the fees of students in Nigerian Universities as well as introducing an educational bank. All the above contributed to the commencement of the strike action.

Lastly, the fact that the renegotiation which was supposed to take place between the federal government and ASUU over the state of the affairs of Nigerian universities was internationally ignored with impunity and that also contributed to the indefinite strike action by ASUU.
