As Portugal and the Netherlands set to square against each other for the Nations League final, Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo will be a talking point.
Being the host of the competition, the former world footballer of the year, whose hat trick took his team to the final could bank on home advantage against the orange.
However, Van Dijk, who had a stellar season with Liverpool could be a stumbling block for the Portuguese as no opponent has been to take him on and beat him, not even Lionel Messi with his dribbling skills during the epic Champions League semifinal clash last month.
But here was Sterling, the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year, slipping away from Van Dijk, who ended the campaign with the other individual award in English football, the PFA Player of the Year.
Yet just as Sterling appeared to have beaten his man, Van Dijk recovered and reclaimed the ball to keep his remarkable record intact.
With 58 caps under his belt for club and country this season, the centre back could set a record of not having any opponent beating him in an entire season with one more 90-minute match on the horizon.
Van Dijk will arguably face the biggest test of all when he goes up against Ronaldo who also won the Italian player of the year in his debut season in the Serie A.
34-year Ronaldo remains a thorn in the flesh of many defenders with what seemed an endless battle with Messi for the distinction of being regarded as the best player on the planet.
As Messi prepares for this summer’s Copa America with Argentina, Ronaldo’s impressive hat trick against Switzerland in Wednesday’s 3-1 semifinal victory highlighted his enduring ability to turn a game on its head.
Van Dick could also earn a double eight days after lifting the Champions League trophy with Liverpool over 2-0 victory against Tottenham in Madrid, by helping his country become the first winners of the maiden competition.
The question that will be on the mouth of the spectators ahead of Sunday’s clash is that If Ronaldo can’t beat him on Sunday, who can?
