The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the South-east Senate Caucus on Tuesday night, met over the categorization of the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization by the Nigerian military and the subsequent proscription of it’s activities by the Southeast governors

The Senate President is also expected to meet with Northern Senators today in a bid to  adopt a consensus position before the Senate Senate resumption next week Tuesday. Since the matter is now considered priority discourse for the Senate.

The meeting which started at about 9.42p.m. was held at the residence of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu

The Special Assistant, New Media to the Senate President, Mr. Bankole Omishore, in a tweet, confirmed that the meeting was to discuss national unity.

“President of Senate @bukolasaraki currently meeting with South-east senators on how to unite the country. To also meet with Northern Senators on Thursday,” the tweet read.

Recall that in a statement which was released on Monday, Sen. Bukola Saraki described the proscription of the group known as Indigenous People of Biafra by Governors of the South-East states and the categorization of the group as a ‘terrorist organisation’ by the Nigerian military as unconstitutional and do not follow due process.  said that until due process are followed the categorization of the Indigenous people of Biafra as a Terrorist group, cannot take effect.

He also assured that the National Assembly intends to embark on a fact-finding investigation aimed at determining what actually happened during the period of the military exercise in the South-east.

Last week, the Nigerian military last week said it had categorized IPOB as “terrorist organisation” after analysing the group’s activities in recent weeks which it said were “clandestinely and actively” aimed at “terrorising the general public.”

Nigerian military spokesperson Major General John Enenche said such activities included “the formation of a Biafra Secret Service, claimed formation of Biafra National Guard, unauthorized blocking of public access roads and extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal roadblocks, militant possession and use of weapons (stones, Molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles, among others) on a military patrol on September 10, 2017.”
