Abuja: There IS No Cause For Alarm, Troops On Standby To Stem Shiites Protest – Guards Brigade Umar Musa
The Nigerian Army has expressed its readiness to combat violent protest by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shiites in the federal capital territory, Abuja and its environs.
NIGERIA NEWS notes that the development came following lingering clashes between the group and the Nigerian police in the city of Abuja.
The commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Umar Musa made this known at the closing ceremony of the Corporal and Below Arms Drill and Endurance Competition in Abuja on Wednesday, May 16.
Musa said the Nigerian Army had the right to protect the president, his family and residents of the territory.
“Yes, we have the responsibility of providing security for Mr. President, his family and the FCT and environs.
“But as it is now, the ambit of the issue is within the purview of the Police and the Police have handled the situation well.
“The Guards Brigade is watching the developments very closely and our troops are on standby in case the situation gets out of hand,” the army chief said.
In an earlier report, NIGERIA NEWS had reported that police nab a daredevil kidnapper, Rambo in Abuja.
Rambo, who is known for his ability to shoot with two AK 47 riffles at a times has been on the top list of most wanted criminal by the law enforcement agencies.
