Barely 24 Hours after his visit to Nigeria, Rex Tillerson has been sacked as the United States Secretary of State by President Donald Trump.
The development was contained in a tweet, through the official Twitter handle of President Donald Trump, @realdonaldtrump. He announced that Rex Tillerson had been immediately replaced by the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Mike Pompeo.
In a shocking twist, the President also announced the appointment of Gina Haspel as the head the Central Intelligence Agency, making her the first woman to head the agency.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job!
“Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!” Trump tweeted.
Nigeria News had previously reported on Monday that President Muhammadu received the ousted Secretary of state at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, they both discussed issues that bordered on counter-terrorism efforts and humanitarian issues in Nigeria’s North-East and the Lake Chad basin.
Tillerson’s week-long visit to Africa came to an end yesterday, having previously visited Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia.
Mr Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was only appointed to the job just over a year ago.
